113: “Through you guys, I’ve found the language. The cycle can end with me.” Using intimate activism to redefine the meaning of strength with Alessandra Rivera
This interview is also available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/yqIRZWUKcnM
Ukulele enthusiast and first generation college student Alessandra Rivera reflects on what unites us as Filipino Americans (i.e.- our shared insecurity of not feeling Filipino “enough”) & the intergenerational conflicts commonly found amongst many Fil-Am families.
Alessandra shares her frustrations in dealing with her family’s “immovable colonial mentality”, challenging the gender binary, colorism & anti-Blackness that we seem to be expected to accept as defaults, & how she realized the importance of self-advocacy & regulation when it comes to seeking help for her mental health.
